“Just as a good foundation is the key to a good house, correct and accurate foundation layout
is the key to a good foundation.” -- Barry Herbert, Founder and President of Herbert Construction Co.
Herbert Construction Co. was the first foundation
contractor in the United States to lay out residential basement foundations with a robotic total station. Today, 100%
of the house foundations that we construct are laid out using one of our Robotic Total Station layout instruments.
The typical method for laying out house foundations is with string lines, batter boards, and tape measures.
When the building lot has lots of topo this can be considerably more difficult to do. This can lead to foundations
that are misplaced on the lot, and with dimensions that do not match the framing plan.
This causes many problems for you, the builder, such as:
- Your time required to address the problem and come up with a solution
- Variance requests by you to the zoning
board for building setback or offset changes
- Construction delays and building schedule problems
- Changes to
the first floor framing dimensions to match the foundation
- Frustrated framing trades and possible back charges
- Questions
from the homeowner regarding modifications to the original plans
When we use one of our Robotic Total Station layout instruments to lay out your house foundation, the
use of string lines, batter boards, and measuring tapes isn’t necessary. This eliminates the inherent errors that
occur while using these methods.
When we construct your house foundation, whether it
is a walkout basement or deep beams, it will be dimensionally correct and square.
